Dear Teachers and Model United Nations Advisers,
It is our pleasure to invite you to the tenth annual Global Classrooms®: BERMUN2 Conference which takes place at the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung from February 19 – February 21, 2015. For schools regularly attending BERMUN2, you will notice that the conference has been pushed forward. Due to internal reasons, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung requested us to reschedule the conference to mid-February; we apologize for the short notice.
BERMUN2 is primarily a regional Model United Nations conference conducted in cooperation with Global Classrooms®, an innovative educational program promoted by the United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA). The Conference Organizers and the John F. Kennedy School are grateful to the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung for providing the venue and logistical support for the conference. Through this simulation, students gain insight into international politics and the work of the United Nations, polish their rhetorical and communicative skills, and work together with other students to find practical solutions to global problems. By preparing the topics and conversing in English, language and research competencies are practiced and refined.
The topics to be considered at BERMUN2 mirror the multifarious challenges confronting the world community today. This year’s banner theme is Dignity and Social Justice for a Sustainable Future:
World Health Organization (WHO): E-health: Using Technology to Improve Global Public Health
Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC): Environmentally Displaced Persons and Social Vulnerability
Human Rights Committee (HRC): Uses of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (Drones)
UNICEF: Child Marriage
The continuing conflict in Syria will be the focus of Security Council deliberations and the Historical Security Council will turn the clock back when it reconsiders the tumultuous conflict in Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1995.
We are convinced that these topics will serve as the basis for challenging research, exciting lobbying and stimulating debate. On Saturday, the final day of the Conference, each of these bodies will deliver a brief summary statement and present their recommendations to the General Assembly.
If your school or MUN-group would like to participate in the 2015 BERMUN2 conference, please register at www.bermun2.de by clicking on the link ‘Register School/Form I.’ Registration closes on January 9, 2015. IMPORTANT: Please indicate the number of students you intend to register in the form. Notifications of acceptance will be sent out to schools on January 16 indicating the assigned UN agencies and country assignments.
The conference fee of € 25 per teacher/student includes lunches, beverages, snacks as well as conference materials. Please collect the funds from your students and transfer them into the bank account listed on our website. Clearly indicate BERMUN2 and the name of your school on the bank transfer.
