Dear Participants of BERMUN2 2019,
UN Secretary General António Guterres has said that “Climate Change is the defining issue of our time.” It poses a “direct existential threat” that the 13th Sustainable Development Goal, Climate Action, addresses. As global temperatures continue to rise, resources are depleted, and standards of living decline. It thus becomes clear that our current course of human development is unsustainable and irresponsible. For too long, short sighted politics and conscious neglect have stood in place of progress. Our generation is in a pivotal position to implement decisive reforms for advancing climate action, and we must do so before we reach the point of no return.
It is our distinct honour to welcome you to this year’s conference. BERMUN2 provides students a platform to engage in dialogue, develop as global citizens, and acquire the tools to act in our local communities. We are pleased to partner with the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and the many visiting schools, and are very appreciative for the continued support of the John F. Kennedy School.
Individually, while we lack the power to implement the required solutions to combat the cataclysmic changes of climate change, when individuals unite as a global community under one common goal, protecting our future remains within reach. Although our path to sustainability is one with many obstacles, the first step to taking action will begin at BERMUN2.
